Would be a great excuse for laziness

How can I be so prone to injury? It seems anytime I get excited about an activity or sport, I get hurt.

First, it was snow skiing, then it was a newfound love of volleyball at the gym, last summer it was water-skiing (my fave!) . . and now it's running. You know that half marathon I was training for? Well, I still have every intention of running it in May. The Sunday afternoon 5+ run from my apartment door, along the Potomac, across the Memorial Bridge, past the memorials, next to the Reflecting Pool and back home . . was fantastic. But the pain in my foot an hour later was not fantastic. And that pain has hung around all week and shows no signs of going away. It's been flats and almost-flats for the last four days, and I am dying to do some form of cardio, any form of cardio to keep my butt in shape, but it hurts to even walk on my foot.

I just scheduled a doctor's appointment for Monday morning, yet I am still hoping that by some great miracle I'll be ok by then. Yeah . . right. How sad!

Do you know if its Plantar Fascitis -

Its a fairly common injury when you start running. A good running shoe with the appropriate heal support (around 30 bucks) does wonders for this.

Oh man!! That is NOT good. Do you have the right shoes? Knowing you, I'm sure you do, but just in case. I know they can fit shoes just to you. Maybe a podiatrist would be able to get ones that would help even more. I admire your determination! You'll totally do it : ) !

If I were to diagnose myself, I would guess that I have a stress fracture. The pain is not in my heel (as in plantar fascitis), but rather on the outside of my right foot. It occasionally pops when I rotate my ankle in a circular motion. I guess we'll find out on Monday.

Oh and I do have new running shoes with orthotic inserts, so at least I know that is not the problem.

bummer!

hopefully it is not a stress fracture. the two people i know who have gotten stress fracutres from running were running 30 to 40 miles a week - consistantly, and had a lot of warning that something was wrong and still kept running. there is hope for you!

hopefully it's not a stress fracture. my cousin had them after running the nyc marathon back to back, a mini iron man and then was training for her third nyc marathon. like k's friend she knew something was wrong for awhile. hopefully, it's not that or maybe just the beginning of it, so you can stay rested for a bit do some low impact stuff and start again.

That's such a bummer. My roommate had something similar when she was training for the Boston Marathon. I don't remember what her diagnosis was, but I happy to report that it was treatable and she ran without it being a problem after that.

Here's to an easy fix from the doc on Monday :)

I hope everyone else is right about stress fractures giving you a bit more warning. Good for you for getting it checked out quickly. Here's hoping it's something minor and easily fixed! Maybe even with a foot massage (wishful thinking for you there).
